Reel-to-Reel Spot Gold for Hybrid Connectors

Reel-to-reel spot gold for hybrid connector strip

Selective gold on stamped strip is how high-volume hybrid connectors keep gold only on the contact zone. SM Finishes offers reel-to-reel spot gold from Bengaluru so Indian, Japanese and Taiwanese connector plants can avoid barrel-gold cost on the entire part. Gold chemistry aligns with ASTM B488 / MIL G 45204 families when the print uses those callouts; spot location and pad thickness come from the stamping drawing.

Quote inputs: reel width, pitch, gold thickness on the functional pad, nickel undercoat, and annual metres. AS9100:2015 and ISO 9001:2015 cover the quality system. Lead time is quoted after we see strip geometry and whether prototype rack gold must match production reel metallurgy.

Why Our Reel-to-Reel Spot Gold Plating Stands Out

We combine technical expertise with stringent process control to ensure consistent, high-quality finishes that meet both functional and aesthetic needs.

  • Selective Gold Deposition
  • High-Speed
  • Micron-Level Thickness
  • Excellent Bonding
  • Compliance with Global Industry
  • Minimal Gold Waste

Our process integrates strict quality checks at every stage, ensuring each plated surface achieves the highest standard of durability, conductivity, and performance—without compromising cost efficiency.

Precision & Craftsmanship

From reel loading to final inspection, every step is managed by skilled technicians using cutting-edge plating lines. Our systems maintain perfect alignment, deposit uniformity, and repeatable accuracy for every component—whether you need small prototypes or large-scale production.

Applications

Reel-to-Reel Spot Gold Plating is ideal for electrical connectors, terminals, lead frames, springs, and precision contact points.

Reel-to-reel process

Strip is processed continuously so gold is deposited on the designed pad, not the whole terminal. Nickel undercoat and copper (if specified) stay in the stack. Spot location must match the stamping — send a plated-strip sample or CAD with the RFQ. Thickness on the pad is verified (Fischer XRF); travellers can support automotive PPAP.

This is not a substitute for rack gold on loose contacts or shells. Low-volume and first-article parts often start on rack, then transfer to reel-to-reel at SOP so the metallurgy stays consistent.

Applications in high-volume connector plants

Stamped hybrid connector terminals for automotive, electronics and industrial I/O where gold is required only on the mating face. Taiwan and Japan programmes typically send pitch, reel width and annual metres with the first RFQ. Aerospace may still use rack gold on looser volumes — we will say which flow fits.

Related: rack gold plating, silver on power pins in the same housing, tin on solder tails. Mixed finishes on one stamped part need the full spec, not gold in isolation.

Spot gold vs rack gold vs barrel

Reel-to-reel: part still in strip, gold only on the pad, high volume. Rack: loose contacts, shells, prototypes, held thickness. Barrel: bulk small parts, wider thickness window, usually not selective gold. Choosing the wrong flow wastes gold or misses spec — send the stamping drawing before we quote. Comparison: reel-to-reel vs barrel plating.

Questions? You’re covered

We’ve gathered answers to the most common questions to help you understand our services, processes, and quality standards with ease.

Reel-to-reel spot gold applies gold only on specified pads of continuous stamped strip, cutting gold use versus full-coverage plating while meeting contact performance on hybrid connector terminals.

Pad thickness, nickel undercoat, pad size and spot location are taken from the stamping drawing. Gold callouts sit in the ASTM B488 / MIL G 45204 family; published plant gold range is 0.05 µm to 10 µm, confirmed by XRF on the pad.

When the drawing calls ASTM B488 / MIL G 45204, we process to that spec. Connector deposits we process are specified without intentional RoHS restricted substances. Our QMS is ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015; that is not a blanket MIL-spec plant certification. Confirm any customer-restricted substance list on the drawing.

Service life follows the specified thickness, undercoat, environment and mating cycles on the drawing. We do not publish a catalogue year-count.

It allows gold to be applied only where required, significantly reducing material costs while maintaining full performance benefits
Yes, our automated systems control gold thickness within microns, ensuring consistent quality across large production runs.
Absolutely. Our plating processes meet RoHS and other global environmental compliance standards.

Yes. We provide reel-to-reel spot gold in Machohalli, Bengaluru for OEMs and suppliers in India, Japan, Taiwan and South Asia, under ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015. See our Japan and Taiwan pages.

Send drawings and the plating spec via our enquiry form, WhatsApp +91 97407 08881, or email info@smfinishes.com. Include annual volume and whether you need PPAP or first-article.

Gold callouts typically sit in the ASTM B488 / MIL G 45204 family. Spot location, pad size, nickel undercoat and pad thickness must be on the stamping drawing — those details matter more than a generic gold plating line.

Yes. Many platforms prototype on rack and transfer to reel-to-reel at SOP. Send both the prototype spec and the intended strip drawing so undercoat and gold thickness stay consistent.
