Copper plating for hybrid connectors
Copper electroplating at SM Finishes is the levelling, conductive undercoat many hybrid connector specs require before nickel, tin or gold. When the drawing calls it, we plate to ASTM B734 / MIL-C-14550. ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015 process control from Machohalli, Bengaluru; company founded October 2019.
Copper is rarely the final connector finish. It improves adhesion on difficult substrates and helps subsequent layers plate uniformly. Thickness is a process-control dimension, not a decorative claim. Lead time is quoted with the full stack-up — copper alone is not a complete connector specification.
Why Our Copper Plating Stands Out
Our copper plating process is engineered for long-term performance. By combining advanced electroplating equipment with strict process control, we ensure every coating delivers maximum durability, reliability, and technical precision.
- High Electrical Conductivity
- Excellent Corrosion Protection
- Uniform Thickness
- Strong Adhesion
- Enhanced Solderability
- Premium Quality Assurance
Copper plating with SM Finishes is not just about applying a layer of metal. It is about creating a functional enhancement that improves conductivity, strengthens base materials, and provides a foundation for additional coatings when needed. Every project is handled with the same commitment to quality, whether it is for intricate electronic contacts or large industrial components.
Precision & Craftsmanship
Every copper plated part undergoes detailed preparation, controlled plating, and thorough inspection. Our technicians maintain exact process parameters to guarantee smooth, uniform finishes that meet the most demanding industrial specifications.
Applications
Our copper plating services are used in industries where electrical efficiency, durability, and cost-effectiveness are critical.
Copper plating process
After clean and activate we deposit copper as a strike or as a build layer, then continue into nickel, tin or gold as specified. On some aluminium or stainless hardware, copper follows a controlled activation and may sit next to conversion coating or passivation on non-contact faces. Share base metal and the full finish callout so we do not quote copper as an isolated job.
In-house Fischer XRF checks undercoat and subsequent layers. Travellers can record copper as a controlled step for Japanese and Taiwanese SQA review. PPAP packs are available when the automotive programme needs them.
Where copper is used on hybrid connectors
Typical stacks: copper + nickel + gold on signal contacts; copper + tin on solderable tails; copper strike before nickel on steel hardware. Aerospace and electronics buyers usually specify copper thickness as a process control. Decorative copper without a barrier is a different duty and we will flag it if the print looks incomplete for a connector.
Industries: aerospace, defence, automotive, rail and industrial electronics — the same sectors as our gold, silver and tin pages, because copper is the undercoat those finishes sit on.
Barrel vs rack copper
Rack copper when the part later needs held gold or tin thickness on contacts. Barrel copper for bulk undercoat on small hardware when the print allows. Complex geometry that must be uniform may need electroless nickel instead of a heavy electrolytic copper build — see electroless nickel.
Lead time follows first-article of the full stack, not copper in isolation. Send the BOM finish list together so masking and racking are planned once.
