Nickel Plating for Hybrid Connectors

Nickel plating for hybrid connectors

Electrolytic nickel at SM Finishes is the diffusion barrier under gold or tin, a wear surface on shells and latches, and a corrosion layer on steel fasteners. When the drawing calls it, we plate to ASTM B689 / QQ-N-290. ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015 from Machohalli, Bengaluru.

Nickel on hybrid connectors is rarely “just decorative”. Bright or satin appearance can be specified, but thickness and whether nickel is final or undercoat come from the print. Lead time is quoted with the full stack and whether first-article or PPAP is required.

Why Our Nickel Plating Stands Out

Our nickel plating process is controlled to achieve optimal thickness, adhesion, and surface uniformity. Using advanced technology and rigorous inspection, we ensure coatings meet the exact requirements of your application, whether functional, decorative, or both.

  • Optimized thickness
  • Consistent microstructure
  • Resistance to chemical attack
  • Superior adhesion
  • Stable conductivity
  • Temperature variations

Nickel plating with SM Finishes offers versatility and performance that few finishes can match. It delivers protection in harsh environments, extends the life of critical components, and provides a premium aesthetic finish that elevates product value.

Precision & Craftsmanship

Each nickel plated component passes through meticulous cleaning, preparation, and controlled plating stages. Our team of skilled technicians ensures consistent results that meet international quality benchmarks for appearance and durability.

Applications

Nickel plating is widely used for its balance of performance and aesthetics, making it suitable for multiple industries.

Electrolytic nickel process

We plate nickel on copper alloys, steel and other prepared metals used in aerospace, automotive and electronics connectors. A copper undercoat is used when levelling or adhesion needs it. Thickness is verified on Fischer XRF. For uniform coverage on complex internal geometry, electroless nickel is the better chemistry — that is a different page and tank.

Quality system: ISO 9001:2015, AS9100:2015, ZED Bronze. Named OEM audit experience (Suzuki, Maruti, Schneider, Kostal) is on our case-studies page. OEM programmes include SpaceX and Israel Defence. Founded October 2019; William Anthony Raj J, 27 years in surface engineering.

Applications on hybrid connector hardware

Signal contacts: nickel under gold. Solder tails: nickel under tin. Shells and latches: nickel as wear and corrosion. Fasteners: nickel as a standalone corrosion layer when gold is not required. Japanese and Taiwanese drawings often stack nickel + gold or nickel + tin — send the full stack-up so we quote one process flow.

Defence and aerospace lots can carry travellers suitable for AS9100 review. Automotive lots can add PPAP.

Barrel vs rack nickel

Rack nickel when subsequent gold thickness must be held on contacts. Barrel nickel for bulk fasteners and small hardware. Mixed-metal assemblies may also need passivation or conversion coating on adjacent parts — sequence those chemistries so one bath does not attack the other alloy.

Questions? You’re covered

We’ve gathered answers to the most common questions to help you understand our services, processes, and quality standards with ease.

Electrolytic nickel is used as a diffusion barrier and undercoat under gold or silver on connector contacts, and as a wear/corrosion finish when nickel is the final callout.

Thickness is taken from the drawing in the ASTM B689 / QQ-N-290 family. We do not publish a single catalogue thickness. In-house Fischer XRF confirms the callout.

When the drawing calls ASTM B689 / QQ-N-290, we process to that spec. Connector deposits we process are specified without intentional RoHS restricted substances. Our QMS is ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015; that is not a blanket MIL-spec plant certification. Confirm any customer-restricted substance list on the drawing.

Service life follows the specified thickness, undercoat, environment and mating cycles on the drawing. We do not publish a catalogue year-count.

Yes, nickel plating provides excellent protection against moisture, chemicals, and wear.
No, it is both functional and decorative, offering strength, hardness, and a polished finish.
Yes, it is often used as an underlayer for gold, silver, or chrome plating to improve adhesion and performance.

Yes. We provide nickel plating in Machohalli, Bengaluru for OEMs and suppliers in India, Japan, Taiwan and South Asia, under ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015. See our Japan and Taiwan pages.

When specified, ASTM B689 / QQ-N-290. Call out nickel type, minimum thickness, and whether nickel is final or undercoat.

When the part has recesses, holes or complex geometry that electrolytic nickel under-plates. See our electroless nickel page and electroless vs electrolytic nickel plating.
