What is passivation in stainless steel?
Passivation restores the chromium-rich oxide film on stainless steel after machining or welding. It is not a plated layer. SM Finishes passivates stainless connector hardware, fasteners and brackets to drawing, including ASTM A967 type processes where specified. ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100:2015 from Machohalli, Bengaluru.
Japanese and Taiwanese prints often reference ASTM or AMS passivation types and hexavalent vs trivalent chemistry constraints. Send that with the RFQ so we confirm tank capability before samples. Lead time is quoted from alloy, spec type and whether the same assembly also needs plating.
Why Our Passivation Stands Out
We combine industry-leading expertise with precision-controlled processes to deliver unmatched quality in stainless steel passivation.
- Corrosion Protection
- Non-Dimensional Process
- Embedded Contaminants
- ASTM A967 & AMS 2700
- Improved Performance
- Eco-Responsible
Our passivation services are engineered to optimize the corrosion resistance and longevity of stainless steel components. Through a carefully controlled chemical treatment, we remove surface contaminants and enhance the material’s natural passive layer, resulting in a high-chromium oxide surface that offers superior protection against rust and pitting.
Precision & Craftsmanship
Our facility uses automated chemical baths, strict process timing, and continuous quality monitoring to ensure every part achieves optimal passivation depth and consistency. We provide full traceability and documentation for critical applications.
Applications
Passivation is essential for stainless steel components used in aerospace, medical devices, marine hardware, food processing equipment, and high-precision engineering industries.
Passivation process
After cleaning, stainless parts are processed to restore the passive film, rinsed and handled so the film is not contaminated before pack. We passivate shells, fasteners and brackets used around hybrid connectors for aerospace, industrial and medical-adjacent hardware. Documentation sits under the same QMS as our plating lines.
ASTM A967 types and any customer AMS callout must be on the print. We will not substitute a plating process for passivation, or passivation for conversion coating on aluminium.
Applications on connector and aerospace hardware
Stainless hybrid-connector shells, clamps, fasteners and brackets. Defence and aerospace lots can carry travellers for AS9100 review. Mixed-metal assemblies often pair stainless passivation with gold-plated contacts and conversion-coated aluminium — sequence so one chemistry does not attack the other alloy.

Passivation vs chemical conversion coating
Passivation is for stainless. Aluminium and some other alloys need chemical conversion coating instead (MIL C 5541-type callouts live on that page). Mixing the two on one assembly is common. Do not send aluminium parts for “passivation” without a conversion spec — we will query the print.
